LANDMARK EU SAFETY STANDARDS TO REDEFINE WORKPLACE FOOTWEAR INDUSTRY

The European Union has introduced sweeping updates to its EN ISO 20345:2022 safety work footwear standard, marking a pivotal shift in workplace safety protocols. Effective June 2025, the revised regulations mandate stricter performance benchmarks for slip resistance, waterproofing, and puncture protection, with a focus on integrating smart technologies to enhance worker safety.

Key changes include the elimination of the SRA/SRB/SRC slip-resistance classification, replaced by a unified SR standard requiring tests on both soap and glycerol-coated surfaces. Additionally, the new WR (water resistance) marking for waterproof steel toe boots introduces S6 and S7 classifications for advanced protection in wet environments. Perhaps most transformative is the inclusion of mandatory smart sensor certification, compelling manufacturers to embed pressure, temperature, or hazard-detection capabilities into safety shoes by 2027.

Industry leaders like Black Hammer and Delta Plus have already aligned their 2025 product lines with the updated standards. For instance, Black Hammer has puncture-resistant work boots with PS/PL markings (denoting protection against 3mm and 4.5mm nails) and SC (scuff cap) abrasion-resistant toe caps. Meanwhile, Intertek’s recent workshops in China highlighted the challenges for SMEs, with 20% facing potential due to compliance costs.
